A Musical Interlude: That's Life
It was all going to be so easy. First the “Shock and Awe” campaign, then the Shiite uprising, then the mass defections by Iraqi military personal, and finally, the collapse of Saddam Hussein's regime. Faced with that prospect, most normal men (might I add, sane men) would have chosen exile rather than attempting to tough it out against astonishingly long odds. But, as military profilers who've studied him relate, Hussein very much sees himself as survivor of life's ups and downs.
A few years ago, Parisoula Lampsos, a woman who claims to have been Saddam Hussein's mistress for 30 years, told ABC News that the Iraqi dictator enjoyed listening to the music of Frank Sinatra – specifically his 60's hit Strangers In The Night. Given the current high-stakes game he's insanely choosing to play, I wouldn't be surprised if this similar vintage Sinatra song (Music and lyrics by Kelly Gordon & Dean Kay) weren't also an old favorite...
That's life - that's what all the people say
You're ridin' high in April, shot down in May
But I know I'm gonna change that tune
When I'm back on top, back on top in June
I say, that's life, and as funny as it may seem
Some people get their kicks steppin' on a dream
But I don't let it, let it get me down
Cause this fine old world, it keeps spinning around
I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet - a pawn and a king
I've been up and down and over and out - and I know one thing:
Each time I find myself flat on my face
I pick myself up and get back in the race
That's life - I tell you - I can't deny it:
I thought of quittin', baby, but my heart just ain't gonna buy it
And if I didn't think it was worth one single try
I'd jump right on a big bird an then I'd fly
I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet - a pawn and a king
I've been up and down and over and out - and I know one thing:
Each time I find myself, laying flat on my face
I just pick myself up and get back in the race
That's life. that's life, and I can't deny it:
Many times I thought of cuttin' out, but my heart won't buy it
But if there's nothing shakin' come this here July
I'm gonna roll myself up in a big ball...
And die
My, my
